Website Design: From PSD to HTML

For those of you who are new to website design and need to know how to make a functioning website out of a Photoshop designed image file, this is the article for you. This is not a technical explanation which outlines each of the steps involved but instead just a quick & dirty explanation of the task at hand so as to get you pointed in the right direction so you’ll understand what needs to be done with your PSD image file.

Before your image or template will function as a real website or web page it will need to be converted into an acceptable or recognized website language format. The most common of these is known as HTML or XHTML, but there are others too, such as Joomla or PHP. Once you convert the PSD image file into an HTML file (or other web language) it will then be a true web page and hopefully be able to function as one (I say hopefully because the conversion process is quite elaborate and must be performed correctly in order for your web page to function 100% as intended).

In order to convert your PSD file into a web ready HTML file you’ll have to make a decision. There are 3 alternatives for conversion. There’s hand coding, software coding, or just hiring someone to handle the entire conversion process for you. Hand coding is something that’s most likely out of the question if you are still reading this since it requires a great deal of html, css and other web based language format experience and knowledge to accomplish. Using software to convert the file may be a good choice if you are already familiar with graphic layering techniques, using an html editor and have the time available to learn the software and get the job done yourself. It’ll cost you some money (perhaps $200 or so) to purchase the conversion software but would be worth it if your site needs many pages converted.

For someone with little or no prior experience in such endeavors your best choice is probably going to be just hiring someone to do the PSD to HTML conversion for you. Pricing for such services can vary greatly and will normally be dictated by the complexity of your specific project. Expect to pay at least $50 per page or more for a good professional who can properly handle the job. Some of these service companies will use hand coding as their conversion method or a combination of both software and hand coding.

While Photoshop based web designs are quite popular today (as they are esthetically pleasing to the eye of most website visitors) there’s no getting around the fact that the related conversion process can be somewhat of a hassle for someone not in the know. I hope this article has at least shed enough light on the subject to give you some direction in knowing now where you need to begin.
